  1. a bit scared about the zf9 speed

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
I never noticed the clunking, but it may have been there at a low level - I wasn't really listening for it. Whatever the cause is, I seriously doubt that there ever were defects in the cooler and its hoses; I think it was just the extra volume of ATF or perhaps resistance with the long hoses...

I'm confused - you are quoting me about the glove box/console lights, but asking about the flashers? The only lights that need resistors are the four flashers, or turn signal, lights. The rear lamps are basic single filament, and aftermarket LED bulbs should just work, or possibly rotated 180°...
  3. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
Saying you don't know the reasoning when a quick web search will confirm the reasoning is what, exactly? I gave a single link to a Tire Rack article, but there are many other reputable sources which I also read - no point in overloading the links - that also refer to accelerated wear to the...

Yes, you and the rest of us aren't automotive engineers (although I am an engineer of a different type). You are expressing an opinion, which you clearly have not researched for the facts. I don't mean to be rude, but it seems to me the reason the US is in such a mess right now is that so many...
  5. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
If it is a full-size spare there really is no limit, although you would want to keep it down if the wear was much different. If you have a spacesaver then as little as possible: that is going to be really hard on the differential, and not particularly safe for braking or on wet roads. I got rid...
  6. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
What is difficult is reading the manual on a 5" mobile phone screen, not getting the pdf manual. I do like referring to the pdf on my laptop, but in the car I am very happy to have a proper printed manual.

    Well that sucks...
  8. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
For the 2016 the last owners manual I downloaded was version 3, which I think is the last. The CD included with the car is probably not current. When I bought the MDX I ordered the (free) printed manual, which was almost an inch thick, and again is not the current version. I'm pretty happy that...
  9. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
The owners manual indicates that replacing all four tires is preferred, but if not then both tires, front or back. I take that to mean that the most important issue is to protect the front and rear differentials, and secondarily the front/back differential.

Nothing to be sorry about - we're all just talking:cool:
  11. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
Wrong answer. AWD vehicles have complex differentials, with limited slip and clutches. One side turning at a different rate than the other will cause accelerated wear on the differential, and if you thought tires are expensive...
  12. Replacing tires on awd

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
I'm shopping now for new tires (Nokian WR-G4 SUV) and the quote included an optional "AWD insurance". What I was told is that it is not a problem to replace a tire if the others have at least 1/2 the tread life left, but less than that and they would all need replacing. The AWD insurance, which...
  13. Brake light led swap

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
Best I can tell the MDX does not have current sensors, only current-dependent flasher relay.
  14. Brake light led swap

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
The connection between the brake lights and the cruise control is unclear. By using LEDs the current consumption was reduced - no "bleeding off" of excess. What can be said with some confidence is that the addition of the correct size resistors would return the electrical consumption to the same...

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
That was not my understanding about transmission coverage - I'll have a look again and get back to you. It seems that there are actually multiple issues that can be described as "chirping". Clearly a warmer that leaks coolant into the transmission is going to mess up the clutch action, and that...
  16. Brake light led swap

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
The resistors do not need to be mounted on metal - they have their own heat sink fins. I just did a search for "LED T5" on Amazon and found this: https://www.amazon.com/WLJH-Extremely-Dashboard-Instrument-Indicators/dp/B0798R76CR/ref=sr_1_8 A little more searching would probably find smaller...
  17. Brake light led swap

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
I was thinking of the resistors for the front flashers; I'm not remembering what I did with the rear lights. Do be careful pulling off the plastic rear lamp assembly - I broke off a mounting ear. IIRC it is best to remove the pins first, then remove the assembly. It really doesn't matter where...

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
That is odd that the large knob did not change the gain - mine has a very noticeable effect. Perhaps they changed in later years to automatic gain. Best to read the manual to confirm. BTW I found it best to download the owner's manual from the Acura owners site as they did revise the manual...
  19. Brake light led swap

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
I had forgot about the possibility of the alternate sockets - not the case. Certainly the bulbs on my list work, and they don't have the alternate bases. I have been using them on my 2016 for more than 2 years with no problems. Well, sort of: I got the wrong resistors for the front flashers and...
  20. a bit scared about the zf9 speed

    Third Generation MDX (2014-Present)
They extend the warranty for potentially affected vehicles. I think it was 10 years/100k miles but that may not be exactly right. If the vehicle is in VIN range the owner will have received a letter informing them of the extension. BTW no clunking today, and I was listening carefully. Ever...
