Weekend trips from Chicago ??

Any good suggestions of a good weekend trip from Chicago this weekend? Looking to just load up the X with the wife and dog and find something fun or interesting. We don't leave the city for road trips, other than to go to the suburbs

I have seen some good posts on BMW sites. Wondering if anyone from the Midwest still looks at this section of the site??

I lived in Chicago for 33 years. I still go back a couple time each year. Not a lot to see this time of year unless you are going skiing in Wisconsin. A couple ideas would be Lake Geneva, WI or Galena, IL. There are some nice resorts in both areas where you could relax and take it easy. I really like the Lake Geneva area. I always enjoy having dinner at Popeye's Galley. There are also about a half dozen resort around the lake. Try http://www.ratelakegeneva.com/

Thumbs up Lots & lots of resort options...

If you want to do more than just drive some other places you can consider include the American Club in Kohler WI the Heartland Resort in Gilman IL, the French Lick Springs Spa & Resort in IN, The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, as easy day trips.

If you are more adventurous consider the long drive to St . Ignace MI and then the loooong bridge over to Mackinac Island -- you stay at the Grand, the Harbor View, the Lake View or the Misson Point Resort.(ferry service from "our side" of Lake Michigan doesn't start until May...)

Into the "Orvis life style" or fine hunting? Head way out to Nebo IL and the Heartland Lodge.

Like driving along the Missippi River? Head southwest to Hannibal MO or northwest to Praire du Chien WI.

Head to a Bed & Breakfast in Winona MN -- it's a college town WAAAAY up the river, and it is actually scenic too -- the Ice Age predassor to the river carved impressive bluffs into the MN stone.

There are tons more...

WOW!! These are great!!

I was looking for something about 2-4 hours away and interesting to see. I may plan a hiking trip somewhere near by so I can bring the dog.

I know that the best time to see something would be fall, but I hope to plan a nice drive for spring to see things starting to take color.

Has anyone been to the Dunes? Wondering if that is worth the short drive.

The Dunes are nice, but not at this time of the year. A great place to go swimming, hiking, or just for a walk along the beach. My favorite place is Warren Dunes State Park. Also, New Buffalo, MI, which is on the way, has some nice restaurants and shops.
