Should I get a new car?!

2002 Mdx 150k just found out I need 5500 work done - steering rack - catalytic converter, belts, front suspension etc etc
I looked on Kelly blue book and it’s only worth about 1000! I loved this car - it’s been so good TIL now. I am thinking it makes more sense to buy a new car. What are your thoughts? Or is this a no brainer?

If you are the kind of person who pays a shop to do the work, then I’d say you’ve reached the point where it makes sense to sell your MDX and buy something new.

If you’re a DIYer and still like your MDX it would probably be worth repairing... You could get a few more years out of it for less than the cost of a few months of car payments.

Also factor in your tolerance for unexpected "down time", which could begin late some night on a deserted stretch of road...

This can happen with any car, but the odds increase with a "well loved" vehicle.

Long time DIYers like to think their golden ears and intuitive bond with their vehicles will give them the prescience to ward off such disasters, but that may be largely chutzpah. I find that I'm less likely to "roll the dice" if there are other family members involved. YMMV.

Another option is to by a 3 year old car that is just coming off of its lease. There are lots of them out there in great condition. Since you only drive about 10k miles per year, you could get one with 40k miles and it would last you another 16 years.

It's worth on Craigslist way more than 1000 especially if you live in an expensive city as long as you don't mind selling to private party. From your year and millage these go for 2000-3000 or so here in seattle
