I have a 2015 MDX and now notice a musty smell the first time the AC comes on.
I let the car run for around 30 minutes with AC on full blast in 30C today and did not notice any water dropping on the driveway.
Where is the AC drain located? This car is practically new with less than 20,000 km (12,500) miles how can the AC not drain.
I think the ac drains must be blocked as I specifically left the car running to see water draining and did not notice even one drop.
I am just not happy to have to go to the dealer again.
I bought a brand new mazda 5 gt in 2014 and havent been back to the dealer for any issues (not even once). Only oil changes and thats it. The AC does not smell, my Volvo s60 that I traded in at 10 years old did not smell.
How does a car I have barely owned for a year with less that 12500 miles have to go back to the dealer for so many flimsy issues.
I have had this issue in my 2016 since pretty much the beginning (it's only @ 7k miles/1 year now) as well despite airing out my AC after using it. It ONLY happens when I turn on the AC for the first minute or two and then it goes away. I think it doesn't really bother me because I barely use the AC (but fan is on all the time).
Let us know if your dealer actually does something about this!
I recently cleaned out the air filter. The air filter is dry.
So I took it in to the dealer today, and they said to bring it tomorrow morning as they had no loaner for me.
The Service advisor could immediately smell the odour and he confirmed it smelled like standing water. He looked under the car too and could not see any draining.
They will take care of it tomorrow.
i'll report back.
So I got the car back from the dealer. According to the work order they checked the operation of all AC components. All okay.
Removed panels of centre console to check for dampness. Okay. Water will drain more the higher humidity. Musty smell can be stopped by turning off ac a few kms before destination as this dries out evaporator.
So smell was indeed gone when I picked up the car but I guess I have to turn off the ac before turning off the car.
I got a 2016 mdx as a loaner. I definitely prefer the 6 speed to the 9 speed. It was borderline undrivable in stop and go traffic especially in sport mode. The 6 speed is so smooth.
Overall this was a pleasant dealership experience. I felt my complaints were listened to and attended to pleasantly.
Ha that's what I do everytime anyway and I still get the smell. Oh well. I guess I'll do my standard hot blast and an anti-bacteria spray into the HVAC intake.
I have a musty smell too but it only happens when I switch to just fan after using the A/C. If I just run the fan, the A/C, or heater I don't have a smell. The smell only occurs when I run the fan after using the A/C like many people suggest. The dealer said they couldn't find anything but I'm not sure they understood the problem.
Regarding the Wurth product ...is it safe to spray directly in the vents ? I'm concerned about the proximity of all the circuitry (navigation & Audio displays) and whether that could void a warranty if its damaged by moisture.

You remove your cabin air filter from the glove compartment. Start the car, you will see the recirc fan spinning in the air filter location. just spray in there. You dont spray it into your vents.
