You should always set your parking brake in general.
Does not matter if the car is automatic or manual trans.
Does not matter if car is parked on hill or flat level ground.
The parking brake is for holding the car in place while it is parked,
If the trans fails while parked the vehicle may roll away the parking brake should hold the vehicle.
It's a small chance of that to happen but the vehicle could be hit while parked just putting the vehicle in park is not enough. It also may be some wear on parts of the trans by not doing this. This is Drivers Ed stuff that many have forgot.

You probably should. It even recommends in the Acura manual to use the parking brake before you shift into park and vice versa. It can reduce stress on the transmission.

I use it on all my cars because that is what it is designed for, as a parking brake. Also on a slightly different subject, we should stray away from calling it an e-brake because nobody should ever use it in an emergency lol

I use the parking brake if I park in space that has tilted ground, whether i park parallel on in a lot. For example, the shoprite near my house, the space has a slight slope from the front to the back. This parking is perpendicular in a lot. The car would definitely not roll back if I left it park alone, however, before I take me foot off the brake, i engage the parking brake so the car won't jimmy back for a second. I feel like that wears some things out.

However, if I'm parking on level ground I never use the handbrake, and don't see why you should. There are no significant forces acting upon the car that the parking pawl has to fight. If the argument is that you always need to engage the parking brake every time you park, then the P position (parking pawl) is moot, therefore useless, and should have no good reason to exist.

Yeah, you may have voted for me, but don't expect me to work for you. I'm too busy catering to the people who funded my election and to the people who bribe me. And remember, if anything goes wrong it's anyone else's fault but mine, in fact it was probably yours. You must be wondering why all this is legal. Well, son, I make the law.

The parking pawl is there yes, but it's still leaving all the force onto that one single device. It wouldn't hurt to always engage the parking brake. And how do you know you're on a 100% level surface? Unless you have a leveling tool everywhere you park.

But hey everyone is free to do whatever they want with their cars. It takes only 25 milliseconds to do with a swift left kick on the pedal to reduce any strain on my transmission, I'm going to do it. (I can bold my points too)

I'm glad to see the new styling on the 2014 MDX. It may be back on my upgrade list from my 2008 model instead of a Q7. We were a TL and MDX family and I waited and tried to get the TL to grow on me. Too butt ugly. Went with the S4 instead. It beats every aspect of the TL except user interface. The Germans design their electronics like they are dyslexic.

Fair points. It just makes me wonder why they put the parking pawl in the first place. It also makes me wonder why they decided to put it on automatics and not manuals.

Huh? Plenty of manual cars have it.
I used to use it all the time, and living in cold weather climates made me stop, as I didn't want the brakes to "freeze". Was that thought silly? Maybe, I don't really know, but what I realized is that I didn't need it. Sometimes when parked on an incline I use it, mostly to reduce stress on the transmission, but that's probably a very small percentage of the times I drive.

In a manual you don't need it, you leave the car in gear and use the parking brake.

Well brakes are hydraulic, so not unless the fluid inside freezes will you have a problem.

But again I'll reiterate, everyone is free to do as they please. Perhaps I'm just over cautious or paranoid, but I hate the feeling of parking and the car is "rockable."

Hmmm...please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't parking brakes mechanical? When you pull the lever or press the pedal a wire/cord is pulled and that's what applies the brakes (rear only) to the car? Maybe the new electronic ones are hydraulic....as I said, I stand to be corrected.
Furthermore, that's not my only "fear", is that the pads would actually freeze on the rotors...probably not a realistic fear though.
