2010 Navi
Fellow Mdxers,
Being our 07 MDX was base, I'm fairly new to using Navigation. Before, when traveling, I borrowed a friend of mines Magellan GPS. The Magellan GPS was great. When used, it would always ring a "ding" sound when I drove in the correct position laid out to ensure I was staying on route when the road would split towards another highway/freeway. My questions is this: Does the MDX navigation do this as well? I've only been able to set it to speak the street names, etc, but if I'm traveling a long distance and there are splits coming up, is there a way to have this "Ding" sound notify me that I am indeed traveling on route? Thanks in advance! Castor |

No. I've used a Garmin Nuvi portable GPS and in many ways it was superior to the unit in the MDX. The Garmin is much easier to use and substantially cheaper. Best part is you can take a portable unit with you from car to car. This is great you go on vacation. I will avoid buying a built in GPS unit whenever possible. The cost is ridiculous and you don't get anything more for the money spent.

You won't hear a ding, but it'll definitely let you know if you stray from the route and will automatically reroute you to get you back on track. The stock nav system in the '10 model is actually a respectable unit.
I copied an extract from the navi manual to provide further detail. "Going Off the Route If you leave the calculated route, “Recalculating...” is displayed at the top of the screen. The system will recalculate the route from your current location and direction to the desired destination then give you a new route instruction. This is done automatically if you have set Rerouting to AUTOMATIC on the SETUP screen (Other) (see page 105). If the Rerouting option in SETUP is set to MANUAL, “Off route” appears at the top of the screen when you leave the calculated route. Say “Recalculate,” or select Recalculation whenever you want the system to perform a recalculation." Note: AUTOMATIC is the factory default setting, so no worries.

I have no dislikes on the '08 Navi unit. Pretty much in subjective in a way I guess.
I do have the latest maps and I found it quite convenient and easy to use. I love the NAVI. I also have a Garmin NUVI on my wife's van. I can't ding but I found the screen hard to see and quite small while driving. In CA, I have to put it on the left side of the driver side also. Another bad CA law, it was easier to read in the center of the windshield.
