2007 MDX Navigation DVD reading error?

About two years ago, I replaced my original DVD with a copy of 4.92 (I think it is 2012?) I made myself. Everything worked just fine until recently. Now I often get this 'DVD reading error, please consult your dealer' message. The navi system would most of the time start up fine, but after a while will choke up and give me this message. The only cure is that I can kill the engine and restart. Most of the time, the problem would go away after two or three trials. What should I do? I inspected the DVD and it looks just fine to me. This has become very annoying. Should I buy a legal copy and maybe the problem would go away? I doubt it, but then I have no other ideas. Anybody can help?

Two things, one is you can try using a DVD lens cleaner disk and clean your Nav disk lens.

Second, either buy a new legal Nav disk or make a fresh copy of the one you have. Your current DVD may still be able to be read completely on your PC and you can make a new fresh copy, and if your PC cannot read it, then you know what is the problem.

the DVD reads fine in my computer. Bought the dvd lens cleaner already:

Amazon.com: Digital Innovations 60120-00 CleanDr Laser Lens Cleaner: Electronics Amazon.com: Digital Innovations 60120-00 CleanDr Laser Lens Cleaner: Electronics

If it does not work, I have to send it to Alpine for service. That is a $400 bill. This makes me hesitate to buy another car with built in navi. A good Garmin with lifetime map and traffic is only about $100. Why should I pay $4000 for this with a lot of hassell in the future?

Hi. I had this problem with my 2005 Mdx DVD. You can send the drive back to the factory and they will repair it. There is a fixed charge of about $170 to do this. The DVD drive is under the front seat. You can find the address on a forum. I think it is alpine electronics in california. If you can't find it I can look for it

$170 is what Alpine used to charge. That went up to $370 this spring.

I wonder if we all get together can complain to Alpine for making an inferior product we can probably get the 170$ fix back. How many out there need the fix? I'm sure if we are 5 to 10 people, we will get it.

Please complete list for 170$ fix on NAV DVD player:

Just as an update. I downloaded the 2012 version (4A.2) of the GPS and made another copy of the navigation DVD and this time, the thing works very well now. It seems that the problem is that my previous DVD was burned using Memorex DL DVD. Next time, I shall switch to Verbatim. Memorex is an inferior product. The additional cost for Verbatim is very well justified.

Where/how do you download the 4A.2 DVD content? Thanks.

Ask somewhere else. This web site is not the place to discuss criminal acts, especially ones that probably have raised the cost of the DVD for the rest of us.

Interesting but with the DVD player based systems you will sooner or later have a malfunction of the player. Remember that that player is spinning all while the car is running. I had a 2007 TL that had a read error and took it to the dealer to get it fixed. They called me and said it was the player and wanted $3000 to fix it. I called Acura and after complaining about the ridiculous amount of money the dealer wanted to fix the problem they agreed to fix it for $200. The car had about 70,000 miles on it and I got rid of it right after that.

So you got rid of a 70k MDX just because of the Nav issue? You are way out of my league.
