New Nav Updates

I have a 2009 MDX w/Nav. if i buy the updates is this a disk that just gets inserted or is there a installation process?

Is this worth the $ 149.00? Is there a better place to buy it than acura?

You can go to NAVTEQ, which is the company that makes the navigation sogtware. They usually are a little cheaper. There is an installation process, which will install the software and map data into the X navigation system. The installation process is straight forward but it is not reversible and you need to follow the directions carefully.

If you ever want to load your old nab disc back to the MDX there is a way to do it. I know you need to hold down 2 buttons near the knob that will let you revert to the old version disc.

I had a 2010 and you had to do the update while the car was running if I remember correctly. It would do the update while you drove and pick up from where you left off when you stopped and started again. I can tell you this, for me and my area it was a waste of money. I wouldn't do it again.

NAVTEQ, the software maker, and Alpine, the hardware maker, don't give you an option to revert the software updates. To begin with, Acura does not give you a DVD with the old navigation software/data and all the old information is erased when installing a new version. Follow the installation instructions very carefully or you can messed up your navigation system and it will cost you to send it to Alpine to try to fix it. Definitely don't turn off your navigation system power while the software is installing, read the warning/directions carefully.

Even if you have the old DVD, the old DVD will be ignored because NAVTEQ does not allow to revert back to older versions.

Though, if there is a non-documented way to start a revert process with an older DVD version, it may come useful at some time or for somebody. Do you have any more details..?

The navigation DVD's are hardware specific. From what I know, the the 04 MDX has a different navigation hardware/software, so the answer is no. If The web page for NAVTEQ offers different DVD's/CD's for the older MDX year models.

I think the orange NAVTEQ DVD is the version for 2004. The link is below:

Our records indicate that the map that you have in your navigation system is our most recent release.

Does that mean they has not been an update for the 2010 model in over two years? When should I expect a map update for my 2012 ?Also, why would any one be incented to buy the MapCare for a discounted 2 updates in two years, if they don't update them that frequently.

I'd like to know this too. When will an update be released for my 2012? Will it lock out the ability to enter an address while driving (like the 2013 model now does)?

Truth is that a $150 Garmin with lifetime map updates will work just as well or better than the unit in the MDX. Not to mention that if you have an Android phone you can use the Google Maps app for navigation. The only drawback to the Android app is that you will need to have a data connection, but that is supposed to change in the near future. I'm about to trade in my '07 MDX Sport and I will not be getting navigation in my next vehicle. It just seems stupid to me to pay $2k for something that is easily done by a $150 gadget.

Yes, the portable Navi's are much cheaper, but I would prefer the 8" inch screen for Navi over a 3 or 4" screen. Also, I would rather have the backup camera display on an 8" inch screen over a 2" inch screen in the rear view mirror. To each their own.

You can can bigger screens, IIRC Garmin does at least 5" and possibly 7".
Right now I am looking at a Honda Odyssey and you can get it without
Navigation and with a 8" screen for the back up camera. That's probably what I will end up with. I agree, that 2" screen on the rear view mirror is pretty useless.
