Okay ---this is a follow-up to my message back in May. Have towed 3 different trailers this summer, two over 500 miles with NO DAMN LIGHTS. What I thought was the adapter problem turned out to be a bad ground on a relay installed at manufacture! Finally raised the issue with service at scheduled oil change and made a ruckus--(I had put an ohm meter on the pins and have never got power). This after paying too much for the dealer to install the tow package at purchase. Well--after 3 days of the head mech troubleshooting it, they finally found the problem. No charge-under warranty. Moral of the story--check out everything when you pick up the new car!

2009 towing an enclosed 6x12 cross country at 70mph in manual mode to keep from gear jumping I got about 12 mpg. The trailer was loaded a little over 5,000 pounds.
Besides the gas mileage issue, the handling was superb! |

I actually talked to the head mech (22 years as an Acura mech). He said they had no way to check the output was active. He actually rigged some light bulbs on wire to jam into my adapter so he could ferret around and to see when the light came on. They also brought a used MDX over with a tow package on it so they could check point-to-point on both vehicles to find out where the break/lack of ground was. Took 3 days at shop. (he is gonna keep the light apparatus for future testing)

I was nervous about towing a boat with the MDX, but I gotta say this thread has me relieved.
I am going to be purchasing a 19-20' center console that I have figured at about 1600lbs of hull, 450lbs of motor, and 970 lbs of trailer. Add in fuel and gear approximately 650lbs for a total of 3670lbs. Well below the rated capacity, but a massive change from the 14' aluminum it tows now. Do we have the ability to lock our differential? What does turning the VSA off do for me as far as climbing a slippery boat ramp?

5100 pound towing
Yes, I have a similar concern to this thread. I recently purchased cobalt 210 boat rated at 3850 lbs w/ trailer that I assume weight around 1200-1300 pounds. We are considering upgrading to a new model 2010 or 2011 Acura MDX but I am just not sure this vehicle can tow an approximate 5200 pounds w/ gas and gear. Any suggestions from other owners here who tow near this weight? most trips are 40 miles or less, but once a year we would likely make a 600 mile round trip haul over mostly flat terrain. I don't want to leave the transmission on the freeway though. Thanks!

IMHO it's too much weight especially after you add gas gear and people.

Interesting question as I have similar scenario but not for a boat. While the warranty says 5000lbs, I am also "told" that the 5000lbs limit can be fudged as it is "conservative" if you are on flat roads. 40 miles shouldnt be an issue. 600 miles well ........ but then again, check with the dealer and make sure he puts in writing ![]()
