04 MDX Problems
Hello fellow MDXer's
I'm new to this forum and thought that I would introduce my MDX and it's fair share of problems. I have gone through the FAQ's and it has helped alot, but I think a few suggestions wouldn't hurt. First off, I have an '04 MDX, 110K miles, I have done the 105K service (timing belt, water pump, transmission flush), I have upgraded to a K&N air filter and always used synthetic oil and 91 octane gas, since I've owed the "X" @ 65K Miles. I live in San Francisco, just a reference so you know what the weather conditions and driving conditions are like for the MDX. And recently, in the last 1000 miles, I have had a low pitch whining noise come from my transmission. So far, the transmission hasn't acted up, no skipping or hard shifting (*knocks on wood*). Any ideas on what it could be causing the while? The sound does go away sometimes after driving it for a while. And more recently, in the last 500 miles, during start up/ warm up, it seems that the car is idling a little rougher than it usually did and it does have a low vibration that wasn't noticable before and the engine sounds louder. I was looking through the FAQ and thought that maybe the EGR valve. But at the same time, most MDX's that were having this problem were with the 01-02. I also thought about doing the EGR Port cleaning, but wasn't sure if the 03+ MDX's would really benefit from this. Any thoughts/ ideas? TIA |

Welcome to the forum! Seems like theres a ton of MDXers out in San Fran. The discussion on the low pitch whine seemed to be trans or differential related. More of a annoyance than a problem. SBM MDX who is from your area had the same issue. They replaced the trans and the sound is gone. He has a thread about it. Transmission Whine Poll
Rough idle could be valves. Seems around 100k and up, the exhaust valves start to get out of wack. Someone reported the intake valves were perfect. The guy had a 06. It could be EGR valve.

Thanks for the reply midnightMDX. I checked out SBMMDX's thread, and it was very informative. But unfortunately, I don't I can go down the route of changing my transmission, just yet. I guess I'll just crank up the stereo to drown the whine. And the idle I was suspecting could be the EGR as well. But before I replace the EGR valve, do you think that cleaning the EGR ports would be beneficial? I looked through both of the threads on your FAQ's on cleaning the EGR ports and it seems like the 03+ Xer's didnt really have much carbon build up.

I dont think it will make a difference with the ports. Maybe check out the EGR valve. Have you changed the spark plugs?

richdizzy is the low pitch noise on the highway? My 04 makes a faint whine at highway speeds but goes away if I take my foot off the gas.
It has done this since I bought it with 50k (now has 101). Never got any worse. |

CODOG2 that is exactly the problem. It's a low pitched whine under load, but none when coasting. My transmission has no symptoms of slippage or hard shifting, just that whine, and as mentioned by MIDNIGHTMDX, its more of and annoyance than a problem.

I have a low volume (only discernible w/ radio off an AC fan low) whine that disappears when load is absent.
Your description of low-pitched whine is conflicting. Low pitched to me is a growl (low frequency perhaps wheel rev frequency or lower) whereas a whine is high-pitched (high frequency, motor speed or higher). I've concluded the noise is an aggravation I'll have to live with. You could replace the transmission and find out it's the differential. good luck |

I've just learned to live with it for the last 50k. Doesn't seem to effect the performance or longevity of the transmission |

Update: I didnt get to do anything this week. But I did get one of those Flip Mino HD Camcorders and I am going to try to record the noises I am hearing from the "X".
Also, does anyone have the part numbers for the ERG Vavle and PCV Valve. I looked it up at the Acura Online Store, but I would like to confirm this before I order it. Thanks! |
