HFL dead on 05 MDX

My HFL stopped working suddenly on my 05 mdx touring (no nav / no res). the buttons on the steering wheel have no effect. the phone no longer pairs. i did notice that intermittently the RM, signal strength, and phone icons on the radio appear all together and then disappear (my phone's bluetooth is off). very strange. i looked in my service manuals and couldn't find anything to explain the icons appearing and disappearing. i tried pulling the fuses that go to the hfl. i also disconnected/reconnected the hfl and still dead. any help or experience is appreciated.

also, if i go ahead and buy a new hfl control unit i noticed that the unit comes with the overhead bezel. the "grey" one is $225 but the "saddle" one is $155. why would the color effect the price so much? my interior is grey but seeing that all i really need is the control module i figure i'll order the "saddle" one and use my old bezel.

thanks,
-rick

I wonder whether you might be having the steering wheel problem for which Technical Service Bulletin 05-247 was written. I don't use the hands-free link, but my radio buttons on the steering wheel weren't working properly (some of the buttons did what a different button is supposed to do). They did the repair according to that TSB and it fixed the problem.

follow up

After testing voltages at the control unit per the troubleshooting guide in the service manual I was able to determine it was the control unit that was not functioning. So I ordered the cheaper saddle color part and swapped out the control unit. Plugged it in and everything worked fine.
