The dealer buys the car from Acura for the invoice price ($40,092 base, $43,455 Technology), less a holdback (2 percent of MSRP) and less any incentives (currently $1500). You're not going to buy a new MDX for the prices you mention, which represent a ~$2K loss for the dealer.

Invoice and MSRP for the 2012 and 2013 are similar - a couple hundred higher for the 2013. But Acura is currently providing a dealer incentive of $3000 on the 2012, vs $1500 on the 2013. So you can expect to pay around $1700 more for a new 2013 than for a new 2012.

Dealer cost on a 2013 MDX base is currently invoice ($40,092) minus holdback ($866) minus incentives ($2,500), or $36,726. So yes, $36,997 sounds like an excellent deal. Dealer cost on a 2013 MDX Technology is currently invoice ($43,455) minus holdback ($940) minus incentives ($2,500), or $40,115. So by shopping around and negotiating you should be able to get one for $40,500-41,000. Whether it's worth paying $3,400 or so more for the Technology package, which includes nav, parking camera, and a much better audio system, is up to you. (I know I posted above that incentives on the 2013 MDX were $1,500 but they raised them and they're now $2500.) |

Did you read what I posted above? If you shop around and/or negotiate well, you should be able to get a new 2013 Tech for $40,500-41,000. No need to spend $42K. That assumes you buy between now and January 2; after that, the incentives could change, affecting the price you pay.
