Loud Noise seems to be affiliated with the AC
I have a loud noise that seems to be affiliated with my air conditioner. It happens more and more frequently. Initially only on very hot days and when the vehicle was slowing down, stopped or accelerating. As time progressed, more and more frequently, and now even happens on cool days (65 degrees). Any help would be most appreciated. I took it in to the dealer and they thought my AC unit might be going out and it would be close to $4K to fix. I have never had an AC unit go out in any vehicle I have owned. Has anyone else experienced this. Thank you!

It depends on what the noise is. It could be anything from a leaf stuck in the vents, to a part that is failing and needs replacement. It's impossible to diagnose a noise without hearing it - you might consider making a video and posting it here (via Youtube) - and even if we do hear it, it may be difficult or impossible to diagnose.
In addition to that, you might want to consider getting a second opinion from a good independent mechanic in your area or from another dealer. |

You don't say what your vehicle is (year). The only thing on an AC system that would make an rpm dependent non-belt noise is the compressor. While that is not an inexpensive fix, it seems hard to believe that it is $4k.
In my experience quality dealers won't say what the problem "might be" and quote a price that woud scare the average person away. They figure out what the problem *is* and give a quote to fix it. I agree with the recommendation above to get a second opinion, whether it be from an indy or another dealer. |
