MDX certification process

quick question:

Getting this MDX 2010 tech from my local dealer NYC(paragon Acura)
51K miles $29K
the mdx was just returned and the are certifying it.

I do understand it goes through 100+ point bla bla bla to make it certify (which of course is not free, $1200 i was charged)

I Found strange that the whole engine was removed form the car when i went to see it at their shop. Is this normal to happends or could it be that the vehicle was not properly serviced and it needs some deep work

should i back off? or would i be better off since they are doing all the work(?)
on the car fax it shows that the car was serviced @ 25K miles and now again

off course they will tell me what was fix to the car(or maybe not)
please advice me
thanks

I don't think that any certification process would remove the engine just to check. Maybe they are replacing something.
I don't see that as entirely bad, they are fixing whatever is broken.

something is not right. A car with 51k miles should not have any kind of issues that would require removing the engine. I would not risk it unless I REALLY trusted the mechanic doing the work on the car.

Think he was saying it is odd (and I agree) that something would be wrong at 51k that would require their taking the engine out.

I'd move on, even if they fix it I would rather have a vehicle with the engine intact from the get go instead of being put together by a local dealer. There should be plenty of 2010's to choose from.

Ask the dealer why was the engine out. If I had to guess I would say 1 of two things happened. 1) a catastrophic engine failure Or 2) the x was in an accident and the front end was severely damaged. I would steer clear of this one.

If it were me i would back out. Ive seen abused loaner cars being sold as certified. I mean at the end of the day they will replace stuff under the warranty BUT its more likely that things will go wrong given the engine was taken out that doesn't sound right to me. But up to you.

Agree with other posters - might want to stay clear if they had to remove the engine at 51K miles.

Also, I've never heard of a dealer telling a customer how much the re-certification cost. Usually they just build it into the asking price. $1200 is a lot for just a 100 point check, so I think there's something else amiss.

Edit: this might be a good thing if they're being up front at what needed to be done. Ask for a full service history as well.

Find out what exact work they are doing, and if you're still willing to take a risk, take the car to your own mechanic for a 2nd opinion. If the dealer balks or stalls at letting you do this, run, don't walk away...

Edit: Insist on getting a 2nd opinion before agreeing to a price.

Paragon Acura, Never heard or read anything good about them. I can't personally comment on their reputation, but they don't seem to have a good one.

Maybe they were changing out the mud valves..

The engine must be removed to get to the 3rd one.
