How to pair bluetooth phone without HFL?

I keep trying to pair my bluetooth phone, but when I say "phone setup" it responds with (a) fan speed up, (b) AM station 570, (c) FM preset 5, etc. Very frustrating.

Also, is there a software update for the HFL?

What year do you have? In my 2005, that would mean you're hitting the wrong button.

I have a 2005. I hit the top button on the left side of the steering wheel, wait for beep, then say "phone setup."

That worked. I feel pretty stupid. So what's the difference between top and bottom? What commands can I give to each?

Top buton is for radio, temperature, fan cntrol, navigation if you have it. Bottom button controls all phone functions, make a call, answer a call, setup etc.
