2011 MDX Hitch

I have searched and searched without any luck.

1. When installing a hitch do you have to purchase or modify the rear garnish?

2. Which Hitch allows you to keep your spare mounted in it original location?

3. The video on utube shows a 2010 MDX is there anything different about the install on a 2011?

4. which hitch is recommended to use if I will be hauling a small trailer and a small fishing boat?

Here's a PDF link for instructions on how to install a trailer hitch to a 2010/11 MDX: http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/r...iler-hitch.pdf

It clearly states in the diagram that you have to remove the rear lower trim/ garnish to install the trailer hitch. A rear lower trim/ garnish will not be applicable when a trailer hitch is installed. It also shows that you have to remove the spare tire.

Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 lbs.

I hope this helps

It says lower the spare tire. That might just be for access while working.

It might need to be reloctated or they figured everyone would have enough sense to raise it again before driving off.

Maybe... It never showed in the diagram to put the spare tire back on

I saw one in the dealer yesterday that has a hitch but I didn't notice if they kept their spare tire underneath... I have to check when I swing by on friday

I believe the spare will still fit. There would be a reason for acura to develop a trailer hitch and not be able to put the spare back or offer a tire inflation kit of some sort.

in 2008 it fits.
If you use aftermarket hitch you may not be able to put FULL SIZE repair.

Last evening while driving behind a 2010/2011 MDX (can tell by rectangular tail pipe) I did notice a spare tire tucked in.

I have the 2010 with the acura hitch.
The spare tire is there.
I had the optional stainless or chrome rear garnish that they had to take off cause its in the way.
the stock bumper is designed to just add a hitch.
I believe the earlier ones had to have something taken off.

1) Rear garnish does not have to be purchased to install hitch. I don't think you can have the garnish AND thae Acura hitch. However, some aftermarket hitches can be installed w/ the garnish already installed.

2) I believe all allow you to keep the spare. Some even allow the use of a full size spare.

3) 2010 & 2011 will be the same

4) Can't help you there. I went w/ the Curt hitch as I'll only be occasionally towing a trailer myself, picking up furniture, appliances, etc. basically I'm trying to avoid getting a pickup so will be renting trailers as needed. I have my eye on a Haulmark 5x8 enclosed v-nose trailer I may eventually buy.

Last question.

What hitch will work for my 2011 and let me keep my spare. Valley hitch? Do not want to spend over 250.00 for a do it yourself model that has the factory look.

IMO, I would stay with OEM hitch since it looks cleaner. I have seen some aftermarket ones on some of the 2007-2009 models and they don't look as clean as the OEM ones. There was a member that posted his installation of the OEM hitch a little while ago, and instead of discarding the bottom garnish of the bumper....somehow, he carefully cut the lower garnish portion so the hitch could protrude through it. I thought that was really cool!

Went with uhaul, figured if ended bad I had a company with some financial backing to solve the problem. $410.00 installed looks great and included the wiring kit. Will try and post pics. Comes with 2 year wiring warranty and lifetime hitch warranty.

I read somewhere on this forum that 2011 didn't need the garnish removal. Was that the case with the uhaul install?

Anybody else want to chime in for OEM or other brands?

The Acura OEM Hitch is Awesome

I had one installed on my new 2011 w tech and entertainment package. The spare stays in the same spot. and the hitch is the standard 18" above the ground. Looks nice and tight with the bumper and aligned with the exhaust. There is a lower section of the bumper molding that comes out and stays out where the hitch goes.

Took the dealer about 2 hours to install including the standard wiring harness.

I'll try to post pix soon.
